Research shows people form a lasting judgement about a home within seconds of seeing it.
Research shows people form a lasting judgement about a home within seconds of seeing it.
You’ve got less than a minute – 38 seconds to be exact – before most people form their opinion of your home.
Our brains are hardwired to quickly assess a space for safety, comfort, and connection as we enter – a longstanding survival instinct that’s hard to override.
For anyone who has spent time and money renovating their home, it’s a sobering thought. You’ve worked hard to get here, and the first impression is where it either all comes together, or it doesn’t.
So, what do you want your home’s first impression to say? And how can we use the language of architecture to say it?
A Renovation with Reassurance
Most people think of kerb appeal as a cosmetic concern that can be ticked off with a fresh coat of paint, new doormat or hanging basket.
But the most effective entrances do something more than look attractive. They reassure. They signal to the subconscious part of our brains that a home has been looked after, and it’s safe and reliable. A well looked-after exterior promises our subconscious that this is a place that is safe and cared-for, and that what’s inside reflects what’s outside.
When that signal is missing – like when a beautifully renovated home has an entrance that looks like an afterthought – a subtle feeling of unease and doubt can be triggered.
We know that decisions around the exterior of the home tend to come at the end of a renovation, when decision fatigue has set in and it’s tempting to just choose the path of least resistance. But, for anyone who has invested seriously in a renovation, the potential to create this feeling of doubt is a risk worth taking seriously.
Designing More than a Door
Your entryway isn’t just one thing. It’s a composition of three key elements that need to work seamlessly together to make an exterior feel cohesive and cared for, to help make the most of the primacy effect our first impressions have.
The Garden & Path
Your front garden, driveway, terrace or path to the front door are what most people think about when talking about kerb appeal, and for good reason. Gardens are always changing with the seasons and need a consistent level of upkeep. This care and effort is what shows, and what visitors are feeling when they form that first impression.
The Door Surround
Often forgotten, the door surround – particularly in period-styled properties – is a key part of creating that congruous façade that makes a first impression feel special. When the door surround is unaligned to the rest of the home’s exterior, it sets off those subconscious alarm bells, even if the space has been well kept.
The Front Door
The proportions, detailing, colour, and hardware of a front door immediately communicate the era and character of your home. There’s a huge amount of creative licence that can be had with a London Door Company door, from colour to unique glazing designs, to door furniture and layout. But even the best door can only do so much if what surrounds it contradicts it.
The most common mistake isn’t necessarily choosing the wrong door, or garden layout, or door furniture, it’s choosing three elements in isolation, without considering how they affect each other or stepping back to look at the entrance as a whole.
Now set that door against a poured concrete path, a rendered surround that predates the renovation, and a porch added in the 1980s. The door is still excellent. But the entrance doesn’t work.
The quality of the individual components isn’t in question. What’s missing is coherence, the feeling that someone has looked at the whole entrance and designed it to purposefully tell a single, consistent story.
That coherence is what separates an entrance that makes an impression from one that quietly undermines the renovation behind it.
Creating an Entrance, Not Just a Door
Most door suppliers sell doors. What they don’t do is look at your entrance and help you understand how a door will sit within it.
For a renovation that has come this far, we think it’s only right that the entrance deserves a different level of attention. We know you’ve probably made thousands of decisions over the course of a renovation, so we’re here to help you make the right one at the final hurdle.
A consultation with the London Door Company starts with the whole entrance, including the door opening, the porch, steps, and surround, and the approach from the street, before we sit down with you to design your dream door.
As local experts, we’ve worked with thousands of London homeowners on the unique housing styles in the capital, and have a deep understanding of how the exterior of these homes can be finished with real architectural integrity.
Take a look at our brochure as your starting point, and when you’re ready, our designers are here to take it from there. Get inspired, see what the London Door Company can do, and take the first step towards an entrance that does justice to your renovation.
